RAR is one of the oldest file compression formats, and it is compatible with various operating systems, like the different
Linux distributions,
Windows and
Mac OS.
WinRAR, that is the
Windows edition of the program, is a great application to
compress and
decompress this compression format, furthermore, since a few years back
WinRAR is capable of compressing and decompressing files that use other compression formats, some of the formats that it supports are: RAR, ZIP, CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, 7-ZIP(7z), TAR, GZIP(gz), UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, Z.
WinRAR will allow us to create a compressed file from scratch, adding files or folders, even various animated folders. We will be able to modify various aspects of these files, like the compression rate, if we want to include a password to limit the amount of people that can decompress the file, create
multivolume files,
selfextracting files, etc... It also offers the possibility to add more files (or folders) to already created compressed files. And of course it allows the user to decompress all these files. The multivolume files option will make
sharing our files a lot easier.
Furthermore, as an additional feature, the application will allow us to
test our compressed files to check that the file have compressed correctly and that is doesn't have any errors. The application includes wizards that will help you step by step to compress or decompress any file.
Without any doubt
WinRAR is
one of the best compression applications for Windows.
